A new capsule should do one thing above all in the morning: fit into the machine without any problems and deliver a good espresso. But are Borbone capsules Nespresso compatible? The short answer is: some are, but not all. The deciding factor is not only the Caffè Borbone brand, but also the capsule line stated on the packaging and your specific Nespresso system.
Caffè Borbone offers coffee for several systems. If you simply put any Borbone capsule into a Nespresso machine, you may be disappointed. However, by taking a closer look at the packaging, you can quickly find the right version - and enjoy strong Italian coffee without unnecessary wrong purchases.
Are Borbone capsules Nespresso compatible?
Borbone capsules with the clear indication "compatible with Nespresso Original" or "Nespresso compatible" generally fit into machines of the classic Nespresso Original system. These include many common devices such as Essenza, Pixie, CitiZ, Inissia, or Lattissima in the Original version.
These capsules are shaped for the brewing unit of the Original system. They are inserted as usual, the lever is closed, and the machine pierces the capsule. You do not need to use adapters or special settings.
The addition "Original" is important. Nespresso offers various systems that look similar at first glance but are technically not the same. A Borbone capsule for Nespresso Original does not automatically belong in every machine with a Nespresso logo.
Original, Vertuo and Professional: The difference counts
The most common confusion concerns Nespresso Original and Nespresso Vertuo. Nespresso Original machines work with the well-known small, mostly cylindrical capsules. Borbone variants exist specifically for this format, provided that compatibility is expressly stated.
Vertuo machines, on the other hand, use significantly larger capsules with a barcode edge. The machine reads this code and adjusts the water volume and brewing process accordingly. Borbone capsules for Nespresso Original fit neither in shape nor in technology into a Vertuo device. If you own a Vertuo Pop, Vertuo Next, Vertuo Lattissima, or a comparable Vertuo model, you should not order Original-compatible Borbone capsules.
Nespresso Professional is also a separate system. Capsules or pods for professional machines in offices, restaurants, or common rooms have a different format. They are not intended for a normal Nespresso household machine. Conversely, standard household Borbone capsules do not belong in Professional devices.
The rule is therefore simple: It is not the brand name of the machine that decides alone, but the system designation. Before purchasing, check whether your machine or the user manual says "Original", "Vertuo", or "Professional".
Not every Borbone capsule is made for Nespresso
Caffè Borbone is known for a wide selection of Italian coffee systems. In addition to Nespresso-compatible capsules, depending on the range, there are also capsules for other machines. These can include systems such as Lavazza A Modo Mio, Dolce Gusto, Borbone Blu, or Espresso Point. These variants differ in size, material, and piercing points.
The name of a variety is therefore not enough. If you, for example, want to try a Borbone blend like Blu, Rossa, Nera, Oro, or Dek, always pay attention to which system it is offered for. The flavor may be available in several capsule formats - the packaging must still match your machine exactly.
A quick check before ordering saves time:
- Look for "Nespresso Original compatible" on the product packaging.
- Compare the shape of the pictured capsule with your previous capsules.
- Check the system designation particularly carefully for Vertuo or Professional machines.
- Never force a capsule into the machine if it does not sit cleanly.
How to recognize your Nespresso machine
If in doubt, take a look at the type plate on or behind the machine. There you will usually find the exact model designation. The capsules you have used so far also give a good indication: Small, narrow capsules indicate the Original system. Large, dome-shaped capsules with a visible ring around the edge belong to Vertuo.
With a Lattissima, the model addition is particularly relevant, because the range is available in different versions. Most older and many classic Lattissima models work with Nespresso Original. A Vertuo Lattissima, on the other hand, requires Vertuo capsules. Therefore, do not rely solely on the name on the front of the device.
In the office, it is worth asking the person in charge briefly. Professional Nespresso machines sometimes look similar to household devices but use different capsules. Especially with larger orders, this clarification protects against a delivery that cannot be used.
Which Borbone coffee suits your taste?
Once compatibility is clarified, comes the more pleasant part: the right blend. Caffè Borbone stands for an expressive Italian style, often with a full body, dense crema, and a flavor that does not get lost in milk drinks. Which variety suits best depends on your drinking habits.
If you like an intense espresso with a distinct roasted note in the morning, stronger blends are often the right choice. They bring structure to a short espresso and remain present even as a cappuccino or latte macchiato. Those who prefer a more balanced cup will likely opt for a milder or rounder blend. This is well suited for an espresso lungo and for anyone who wants less bitterness.
Decaffeinated Borbone capsules make sense if you want to drink coffee in the evening or reduce caffeine without giving up the typical espresso flavor. The same applies here: In addition to the variety, pay attention to the correct system indication.
For households with different preferences, mixed packs or smaller quantities for testing are often more sensible than a large supply of an unknown variety. Once you have found your favorite, larger packs or a coffee subscription are particularly worthwhile for heavy drinkers and small teams.
Compatible does not mean: Every cup tastes the same
Even if a capsule fits technically, the machine, water, and maintenance affect the result. A regularly descaled machine brews more evenly and brings the aromas more clearly into the cup. If the coffee is suddenly thin, too slow, or unusually bitter, it is not necessarily due to the capsule. A full capsule container, calcified pipes, or a dirty spout can also be the cause.
The cup size also makes a difference. Italian Borbone blends usually work best as an espresso or as a short, concentrated coffee. If you brew the same capsule with a lot of water, it will inevitably become lighter and can lose its character. For a lungo, you can choose a suitable setting or use two short brews if you want more intensity.
Third-party capsules can also run slightly differently on individual machine models than the original capsules. This does not automatically mean that something is wrong. As long as the capsule can be inserted easily, the brewing starts normally, and no water leaks out, use is not problematic. In case of repeated problems, you should clean the machine and check again whether you really have the right capsule line.
The right order without guesswork
When purchasing, a clear order is worth it: first determine the system, then check the capsule compatibility, and only then select the variety. This way you can quickly find out whether you want a strong espresso, a balanced blend, or decaf, without ending up with capsules for the wrong device at home.
At Baristacoffeeshop you will find original Italian coffee for different systems and tastes. For many orders in Switzerland, fast delivery is a practical advantage, especially when the capsule supply is running low. From 70 CHF, delivery is free; with larger packs or a subscription, you can additionally shop with predictability and save.
If your Borbone packaging clearly states "Nespresso Original compatible" and you own an Original machine, nothing stands in the way of the espresso. For Vertuo, Professional, or an unclear model designation, the short check before purchase is worth it - then exactly the Italian coffee that your machine can actually process will end up in the cup.
